Genesage
"Grapes"
(Chp2:7)
In the meetings at least one person from each house was asked to attend. This was a primary way to find out information so every house sent one volunteer to participate in the community meeting. It was a cross between a class, a meeting, a meal and a time of fellowship. Most enjoyed attending.
Everyone had been absent at some time for any number of reason though never seemingly for sickness or health. Everyone had missed at least one day. Everyone except the one person who never seemed to miss any days.
The sparrow in these last sixty-nine years had not missed one meeting, one gathering, one assembly. He was always there like a fixture, watching. Every day He attended and everyday he sang. No one paid any attention anymore, after all, the bird was always there.
Each morning a song would play from the sparrow's repertoire. The bird did like to sing. Every morning it reminded Eben how glad he was to have living music. No radio's CD's I Pods or technology. Just good old fashioned "personal" music. The bird was his own DJ which in Ebens mind, the bird did just fine.
Eben wasn't opposed to the “Old Ways” or the music, merely the cost that had gone into it. One thing he mentioned a lot of was the idea that no one counted the cost of technology.
Everyone could see the short term effect, but never the long.
It was a generational blindness that Man looked at one lifetime focusing only on the short term gain or reward. The long term cost was not considered in light of the ages nor eternity.
If I can have mine now I want it , was the rule of thumb in the old ways.
Songs Eben enjoyed and could sing, yet he liked the Sparrow's Music. Listening to angels sing had been quite an experience. Certainly hearing the Voice of God in song had been awesome. Yet there was something familiar and warm about the “Sparrows Song”.
Eben liked the underpinnings of Creation, the gentler tones and 'voices'. Listening to the Sparrow was one of those softer, gentler, more peace full moments. When Eben spoke though the sparrow would stop its song. But every day was a day greeted in the meeting room with music.
Great green curled leaves vining in warp and woof enclosed the meeting rooms ceiling. The walls, ceiling, in fact the whole structure was a Vining wonder of synchronized growth. Bonzai could not have been this structured, because Bonsai was tiny, while this “building” was quite large. And it was all plantings.
The grapevines Eben grew together with; concord and green, Noah and Campbell, Kyoho and Catawba, all clustered with dangling grapes. Many more varieties of species of grapes were present flowing intermittently from twelve stalks planted around the room making up the walls as the vines wove up and across. Four mighty grapevines grew up on each corner, seemingly larger than the rest; north, south, east, west.
These weren’t ordinary grapevines crucified in a “T” form to “produce” for man. No, these were let wild and free yet asked to grow in a way that formed full walls with ceilings arranged to boast it’s fruit.
Rather than be a crop to harvest, it was creation celebrating life plentifully. With the curse removed from Creation, grapes could grow like cantaloupes. Certainly Eben had grapes no one would ever forget. Most could barely eat just one.
In class Nehevivor was talking to Caleb one day about the grapes.
He was telling Caleb to ask Eben about the size of the grapes and how he got them to grow so big. Pushing him a little it was obvious Caleb did not want to ask Eben about his grapes.
It was also obvious Nehevivor couldn’t let go of the grapes. Everyone knew Eben liked Caleb so Nehevivor kept pushing Caleb till one day Caleb asked.
“How did you get the grapes to grow so big?”
Eben said,
“ I was told the secret missing ingredient”
Nehevivor had been listening intently.
When he heard that he could not contain himself. He was always up for a secret and just couldn’t help himself. He always had to track down who said what and where and why as well as what secret who had what about what.
He asked.
“Who told you?”
Thinking to himself he could go and hear it himself. Besides if it was a secret, he just had to know what it was.
Ans so Nehevivor paid close attention when Eben began to speak.
Eben said,
“I heard it through the grapevine”
